What is MySQL - MySQL is a multithread, multi-user database management system or DBMS software, with around 6 million installations worldwide. MySQL AB makes MySQL available as a free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL) license, but they also sell under a commercial license for cases where its use does not match the use of the GPL.
Unlike Apache which is a software developed by the general community, and copyright for source code is owned by their respective authors, MySQL is owned and sponsored by a Swedish commercial company MySQL AB. MySQL AB holds full copyright almost all of its source code. The two Swedes and one Finn who founded MySQL AB were: David Axmark, Allan Larsson, and Michael "Monty" Widenius.
